Maria Popa

Soprano

The young and highly talented Maria Popa studied at the Music Academy Gheorghe Dima in Cluj-Napoca, one of the most important cultural centers of Transylvania. During her studies she performed, among others, Prince Orlofsky in the Fledermaus.

At the Romanian National Opera Cluj-Napoca, she sang the Paggio della duchessa in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Maria Popa had ten years of violin lessons before her transition to opera singing.

In 2010 she won the National Singing Contest in Bistrita, Romania and was a semi-finalist of the Bertelsmann Foundation’s New Voices Competition in Gütersloh.

From 2014/15 until the end of the 2015/16 season, she was a member of the Opera Studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

During the season 2015/16 she performed in Düsseldorf Giovanna in Rigoletto, Sandmännchen in Hänsel und Gretel, Dryste in Ariadne auf Naxos and in Der Rosenkavalier as well as in Werther and a flower maiden in the premiere of the children’s opera The Snow Queen.

In February 2018 Maria Popa made her debut in the role of Nedda in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci in Düsseldorf.
