Tassos Apostolou was born in Athens and studied classical singing with Frangiscos Voutsinos. With a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation he continued his studies under the soprano M. L. Cioni and Maestro R. Negri in Milan, Italy, where he won the “Luigia Stramesi” international classical song contest. He is a Veakis Dramatic Art School graduate and has attended classes, rehearsals, acting and directing seminars under Luca Ronconi at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. He further graduated from the Department of Political Sciences of the Athens University.
He has sung as a soloist with the Greek National Opera, the Opera of Thessaloniki, at the United Nations in New York, in Boston, at Lincoln Center New York, the Theatre of Herodus Atticus, at Delphi, the Ancient Greek Theatre of Epidaurus, the Athens Megaron Concert Hall, in Milan (Italy), Beijing (China), Alexandria (Egypt), Qatar etc. He has collaborated with important Greek composers in concerts, world premieres and recordings. He has also acted in films and in television productions of the Greek National Television.
His repertoire includes the leading bass roles in: Verdi’s Macbeth, Aida, I Vespri Siciliani, Don Carlo, Ernani, La forza del destino, Simon Boccanegra, Requiem, Gounod-Faust, Puccini’s La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’ amore, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Bellini’s I Puritani, La Sonnambula, Norma, Bizet’s Carmen, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Requiem, Händel’s Semele, Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Weil’s Der Zar lässt sich photographieren, Henze’s El Cimarron, among others. Directors with whom he has worked include Graham Vick, Hugo de Ana, Giancarlo del Monaco, Francisco Negrin, and R. Zanella.
During the 2017/18 season he thrilled audiences and the press with his captivating Alidoro in a new production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Theater Basel. Tassos opened the 2018/19 season with a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, once again in Basel, where he was cheered by audiences and critics alike for his interpretation of Raimondo.
This season will further include Le Comte des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon and Raimondo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Greek National Opera (co-produced with London’s Royal Opera House).
