Vicente Martínez Alpuente

Conductor

A renowned specialist in Spanish opera and symphonic music, Vicente Martínez Alpuente has been celebrated by the press as having “taken the lead in this genre through meticulous precision”.

Born in 1976 in Valencia into an artistic family of several generations, Martínez Alpuente was enrolled in the Conservatorio Municipal “José Iturbi” de Valencia at the age of 7. He later studied conducting at the University of Valencia, the Arts Academy di Roma with Bruno Aprea, as well as the Accademia Chigiana di Siena with Gianluigi Gelmetti. After further refining his skills with Vladimir Ponkin in Russia and his principal mentor, the American conductor George Pehlivanian, he served as assistant conductor with Spain’s National Youth Orchestra.

In 2006 Vicente Martínez Alpuente made his international debut with the Armenian National Opera conducting Verdi’s “La Traviata” to great critical and public success. He has subsequently worked with singers such as Isabel Rey, Maite Alberola, Alex Vicens, Arturo Pastor, Yolanda Marín, as well as instrumental soloists Gary Levinson, Javier Perianes, Erika Dobosiewicz, Andrea Oliva, Adriano del Sal, Paola Requena, Srdjan Bulat, Patricio Cosentino and Thomas Viloteau.

In addition to commanding a well-versed classical repertoire, he is known for his distinguished musical skills coupled with a pronounced creative drive that has led him to found the Spanish Opera Festival of Valencia as well as the International Academy of Music, City of Valencia (AIM). He is particularly committed to the revival of mid-19th to early 20th century Spanish music. One of his most illustrious and ambitious undertakings is the “Chavarri Project”, through which he has been uncovering, editing and interpreting the entire orchestral catalogue of the Spanish composer Eduardo Lopez-Chavarri (1871 – 1970), a task involving meticulous research through the composer’s manuscripts.

Martínez Alpuente has been invited to lead orchestras around the world, including the Spanish National Youth Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Krasnoyarsk Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfónica di Bari, Orquesta Filarmónica de Valencia, Orchestra de la Magna Grecia de Taranto, Ensemble Valencia Contemporánea, Orchestra of the National Opera & Ballet of Armenia, Festival of Sofia Orchestra, Orchestra dell Teatro Olimpico di Vicenza, Orquesta Provincial de Bahía Blanca, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México, L’ensemble Orchestral de Valencia, Orquesta de Valencia, Orquesta Manuel de Falla, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa, among others.

His concerts have been broadcast by the Spanish Radio-Televisión (RTVE) and the Valencian Radio Televisión (RTVV). In 2009 and 2012 he conducted the finals of the prestigious Spanish guitar competition Francisco Tárrega Benicassim.

His 2016/17 season featured concerts and tours throughout Spain, the USA, Mexico, Argentina and Italy.

In 2017, Maestro Martínez Alpuente was appointed Music Director of the JONMEX National Youth Orchestra of Mexico.
