Bass-Baritone

Born in Dresden, bass-baritone Johannes von Duisburg, studied and obtained his degree at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. There he attended master classes by Kammersänger Prof. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and was awarded first prize in the Philip Morris Young Artists Competition, second prize in the Hannover State Opera Singing Competition, as well as the O.E.Hasse Award for outstanding stage-performance.

He subsequently joined the Mecklenburgische Staatstheater Schwerin and made his role-debuts as Don Pizarro in Fidelio and as the (world`s youngest) Flying Dutchman. As a freelance artist he has sung at leading opera houses throughout the world, including Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Cagliari’s Teatro Lirico, Geneva’s Grand Théâtre, Lisbon’s Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Florence’s Teatro del Maggio Musicale, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia as well as Teatro dell`Opera in Rome, Teatro Lirico in Trieste, the Hungarian State Opera House Budapest, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, as well as in Cologne, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Prague, Strasbourg and the Festivals in Wexford, Bregenz and Savonlinna, Spoleto, Ravello and Ravenna.

His roles include Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, the title role in Der Fliegende Holländer, Telramund in Lohengrin, Jochanaan in Salome, Amonasro in Aida, Kaspar in Der Freischütz, Escamillo in Carmen, Scarpia in Tosca, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, Wotan/Wanderer Rheingold/Siegfried/Walküre, as well as John Claggart in Billy Budd.

He has also taught at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and regularly receives invitations to hold master classes throughout the world. In April 2015 he was awarded the honorary title of “Kammersänger”.

Johannes von Duisburg has worked with renowned conductors and directors, including Bertrand de Billy; Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos; Myung-Whun Chung; Daniele Gatti; Leopold Hager; Alain Lombard; Pinchas Steinberg; David Alden; Götz Friedrich; Harry Kupfer, Robert Wilson, Willi Decker, Francesca Zambello, among others.

Von Duisburg has sung in TV broadcasts including “Sommernacht der großen Melodien” with Montserrat Caballé. His CD recordings include Strauss’ Die Ägyptische Helena (Altair) and Kurt Weill’s Der Protagonist and he has DVD recordings of Aida as Amonasro and Carmen as Escamillo.
